Jan Budtz came to national attention when he saved 2 penalties for Doncaster to knock Premier League side Manchester City out of the League Cup in 2005. Budtz continued in goal at Belle Vue until he suffered a broken hand in 2006.

After this injury he could not force his way back into the side and was allowed to join Wolves on loan in March 2007, he played 4 times for Wolves before being recalled. Budtz was released in June 2007 and subsequently joined up with Pools.

He began his Pools career as first choice but made several mistakes in key games, despite the manager sticking by his man he was finally dropped after being booed off for two home games in a row.

Budtz found himself on the bench for much of his second season but received praise when he replaced the suspended Arran Lee-Barrett in goal during December, this was followed by calls to reinstate the Dane as Pools first choice keeper.

The keeper spent time on loan at Oldham Athletic after an injury crisis at Boundary Park but was dropped after 3 games and soon returned to Hartlepool. Following another Arran Lee-Barrett sending of Budzt returned to the Pools side and started the last 6 games of the season before being released on the 6th of May.

"Jan Budtz showed initial promise at Pools but after making several mistakes was dropped. Prone to making mistakes but a competent shot stopper."
