Michael Mackay joined Pools in February 2007 after scoring 43 goals in a season for non-league Consett Town. He had previously played for Birtley and Durham City where he boasted similar records.

Danny Wilson offered him a chance to test himself in the Football League and he duly accepted. Mackay spent time training and made his debut as a sub in the final match of the 2006/07 season against Bristol Rovers. It was nearly a dream debut for Mackay but he had a goal chalked out for offside.

He scored his first goal just 2 months into the 07/08 season and scored 5 more during the rest of the campaign despite making most of his appearances from the bench. Mackay continued to feature regularly in the team, usually as a substitute but also in the staring XI in the 08/09 season, adding another four goals to his tally.

He signed a new contract with the club in the summer of 2009 but spent the first half of the season on loan at Conference side Gateshead where he scored 3 times in 18 league appearances before returning to Victoria Park at the start of 2010.
