Despite an excellent record at Scottish side Ross County, Neale Cooper was still a surprise appointment when he was unveiled as Hartlepool United manager in the summer of 2003.

Predicted for relegation, Cooper took his side to the League One play-offs in his first season at the club before repeating the feat a year later. He left the club under a cloud May 2005, just before the second play-off campaign and went on to manage Gillingham and Peterhead.

Following the departure of Mick Wadsworth at the end of 2011, Cooper was reinstated as manager just after Christmas, working alongside Micky Barron and Ritchie Humprheys, both familiar faces from his first spell at the club.
