Joel Porter arrived from his native Australia in 2003 with 112 games already under his belt including scoring 6 times in 4 games for the Australian national side. Neale Cooper offered the striker a short term spell after unsuccessful trials at Sunderland and Wigan.

Cooper awarded him an 18 month contract in January 2004 and Joel benefited from a full pre season before the 2004/05 campaign. During this season he formed a formidable partnership with Adam Boyd and scored 15 times, his good form won him the Supporters' Player of the Season award.

Porter suffered a serious knee injury which kept him out of the Hartlepool first team for 10 months as Pools were relegated to League Two in 2006 but he returned to the first team in the following season, scoring 4 goals in 15 starts, however he picked up another serious injury which kept him out for a further 5 months. Porter returned to first team action in April and featured in Pools last six games, scoring once, as Pools returned to League One.

After a slow start to the 07/08 campaign, including a spell on the sidelines, Joel forced his way into the first team and became a key player once again by the end of the season and ended the term with 13 goals.

Joel firmly cemented his position as Pools main striker at the beginning of the 08/09 season and finished top scorer with 23 goals, Joel returnd to his native Australia at the end of the season, signing a deal with A-League side Gold Coast United.

"Porter is a pacy striker who has recovered from a series of terrible injuries in the past few years. He now appears to be back to his best and his skillful play is big threat up front. He hard working attitude have sealed his place as a fans favourite."
