Ian Butterworth joined Hartlepool United shortly after Danny Wilson was appointed Manager. He is currently in charge of the Reserve Team. He has previously worked as an assistant manager at Cardiff and close rivals Darlington as well as having a position at the Football Assosiation.

Butterworth led the reserve team to the Pontins Cup final in his first season in charge, they lost out to Rotherham in the final. Butterworth left the club in February 2009 to join his former side Norwich as assistant manager to new Canaries boss Bryan Gunn.
