As a product of Hartlepool United's youth system, Antony Sweeney made his début in the 3-0 home win over York City back in October 2001. He was in and out of the side for the next couple of seasons before he made his first big impact in the 2003/2004 season

Under new manager Neale Cooper he broke into the first team and went on to complete the season as a first choice midfielder and played in both Play-Off semi finals against Bristol City.

The 2004/05 was Sweeney's best in a Pools shirt, he played 57 games and scored 14 goals as Hartlepool reached the play-off final. He was awarded the 2004/05 Supporters` Away Player of the Season. The next season was less productive, he featured in 40 games but he scored just 5 times, Pools were relegated.

He bounced back as in the following promotion season as he played 34 times but failed to find the form he had earlier in his career. In the 2007/08 season Sweeney found himself in and out of the side and was placed on the transfer list in the January of that season.

No bids came in and the midfielder fought his way back into the first team. Sweeney started in Pools last 19 games, often at right back, and sealed a new contract as the season drew to a close.

The close season of 2009 saw Chris Turner recruit new defenders Neil Austin and Steve Halsam which saw Sweeney switch back to his favoured attacking midfield position and after a solid season, he returned to his best in the 2010/11 campaign, scoring 14 times and picking up a number of awards for his performances.

Sweeney had been linked with moves away from the club after his goalscoring exploits but penned a new long-term deal with the club in the summer of 2011.
