Hartlepool United signed versatile defender Steve Haslam after a successful trial at the club in the summer of 2009.

Haslam had just been released by League Two side Bury and Chris Turner, who had previously managed him at Sheffield Wednesday, snapped up the defender who boasts the honour of captaining England Schoolboys.

Before his move to Bury he had played for Halifax who signed him from Northampton. He made a promising start to his Pools career by being included in the League One team of the week for his début performance.

Despite being used more as a squad player than a regular starter, Halsam made 52 appearances in his first two seasons at Victoria Park, playing everywhere across the back four and also in central midfield.

His versatility and solid performances were rewarded with an extended contract by boss Mick Wadsworth in the summer of 2011. His first team chances were restricted during the following campaign and Haslam left the club in the summer of 2012.
