Gateshead, Barnsley, Darlington
Neil Austin became Hartlepool United's fourth signing of the 2009 summer transfer window when he completed his move from rivals Darlington. Austin who started his career at Barnsley, became a first choice full-back after only two professional years at Oakwell before moving onto Darlington in 2007, when Barnsley were promoted to the Championship.
He quickly established himself as a fans favourite and key player for the Quakers after his arrival and played over 60 games for Darlo, despite suffering injury problems. He was named in the League Two Team Of The Year for the 2008/09.
An injury in late pre-season kept Austin out of the team at the start of his first season at Victoria Park, but he soon gained the right back position from Steve Haslam and played 36 times that season, scoring 3 goals.
The 2010/11 season again started with injury for Austin, this time a clash in the opening game of the season ruled him out for over a month, on his return he was an ever-present until another injury in February 2011 ruled him out for most of the remaining season.
