Peter Hartley joined Pools in the summer on 2009 after his release from neighbours Sunderland. Born in Hartlepool, he still attended matches at the Vic as he was only ever selected once for the Black Cats first team.
Despite being highly rated at the Stadium Of Light he went on loan to Chesterfield in 2008 to gain experience, where he played in 12 games. After being deemed surplus to requirements at Sunderland he made the switch to his hometown club where he soon became a first team regular.
Having played at left back during his first season at Victoria Park, he made a switch to his natural centre back position for his second season and won many plaudits for his solid displays alongside Sam Collins. He signed a new long-term contract with Pools in the summer of 2011.
