Stephenson joined Pools as a player in 1998 and became youth team coach in 2003 following his retirement a year previously. He was handed the job of Pools caretaker manager in February 2006 but failed to keep Pools in League One follwoing Martin Scott's disasterous reign.

He returned to the youth team job after Danny Wilson's appointment but controversially left Pools to join Glenn Roeder's coaching team at Norwich City at the end of 2007. Just over a year later he and Roder were sacked as the Canaries found themselves fourth bottom of the Championship. He later joined Huddersfield Town as a coach.
