Ben Clark joined Hartlepool United in October 2004 after 5 years with Sunderland. The versatile defender/midfielder made the move to Victoria Park after he was allowed to leave by boss Mick McCarthy.

Clark gained international experience after captaining England at Under 19 level and also representing his country at Under 15 and under 18 levels. Clark arrived at the Vic with plenty of experience under his belt, despite the fact he failed to break into the first team at the Stadium of Light. During the five years he spent at Sunderland Clark started just 9 games with a further 5 appearances from the substitutes bench.

After his move to Victoria Park Clark struggled to break into the first team yet made 32 appearances during his first season, however they were from all over the park as Clark played right back, left back, centre back and central midfield.

During the 2005/06 season Ben broke into the first team, he played most of the season in his favoured central defensive role after beginning the season in midfield. He formed a formidable partnership with Michael Nelson and this continued into the 2006/07 season when Ben scored his first goals for the club.

Clark struggled with injuries during the 2007/08 season and found himself moved to midfield with the arrival of Sam Collins in January 2008. He suffered an injury at the start of the 09/10 season that prevented him from playing and on recovery his appearances in the first team were restricted due to the fine form of Sam Collins and Gary Liddle. After failing to regain his first team place he was released at the end of the campaign.
