Adam Boyd made an immediate impact when he made his Pools début aged 19, within minutes of coming on as a substitute he scored the winning goal against Shrewsbury.
Despite an undoubted talent, Boyd failed to hold down a regular place in the Hartlepool team and looked set to leave the club in 2004 after a loan spell at Boston United. The Pilgrims were unable to stump up a transfer fee and the deal fell through.
On his return to Victoria Park he scored 12 goals in 10 games to fire Pools into the play-offs. Boyd featured even more heavily the next season, scoring 29 goals as Pools reached the play-off final in Cardiff.
An injury ruled him out of large parts of the following season and he was sold to Luton Town in the summer of 2006 for £500,000.
After a disappointing spell with Luton he moved to Leyton Orient and finished top scorer twice before sealing a dream move back to Victoria Park in May 2009.
However, Boyd found himself in and out of the first team during his first season back at Victoria Park, despite scoring 9 goals in all competitions he found himself rooted to the bench by the end of the campaign.
The following season followed a similar trend, after a good start, scoring twice in the opening two games, Boyd didn't find the net again until the following April.
However, having shown a willingness to improve his fitness, manager Mick Wadsworth handed the striker a new contract in the summer of 2011. It appeared Wadsworth's faith had been well rewarded as Boyd started the 11/12 campaign in fine form, scoring five goals before the middle of October.
However, his form drifted and Boyd was restricted to the bench following the return of Neale Cooper to the club. He was released in May 2012.
