Hartlepool v Cambridge United, September 19th 2015 by Billy Zinc.

Not only another uncharacteristically warm afternoon at the Vic, but also an uncharacteristic performance by the home team. Unfortunately the most one sided performance I have witnessed in recent years, with the home side enjoying around 80% of play, particularly in the second half, only saw them come away with a point.

After the first ten minutes it seemed to be all Pools, though it has to be said that two Cambridge forwards were instrumental in keeping Pool's clean sheet with consecutive goal line blocks of on target shots from their colleagues, in the first half. For Pools Bingham was lively with some delft touches beating his man, but he was also guilty of coming second when trying to dribble his man and being ineffective when given space for shots. His best attempt, which was blocked, came from a volley where he didn't need a second touch. Paynter to, was guilty of squandering chances, not being able to control and then losing the ball in front of goal, when looking for second or third touches instead of directing it to the back of the net.

After the recent defeats the match can be considered a turning point (I hope), with a good footballing performance from most the team, notably man of the match Halliday, who was unlucky not to see his name on the score, or assist, sheet. Only the lack of confidence from the strike force, who, at times seemed to want to pass the ball into the net, kept the score at 0-0. I believe Fenwick, who can turn the most dismal game, was on the bench, and maybe should not have remained there for the full match.

Cambridge can go home satisfied from gaining a point from such an inept performance, and Pools can spend the week at Maiden Castle teaching showing the forwards where the goal is.
