Game Over: Defeat Sees Hartlepool Hit Rock Bottom

Hartlepool United lie bottom of League One after losing this evening's crunch game with Bury.

Report

It was a battle between League One's two bottom sides at Gigg Lane as Hartlepool traveled to face Bury.

Neale Cooper made two changes for the match with Peter Hartley and Ritchie Humphreys returning to the starting line-up in place of wingers James Poole and Jonathan Franks.

However, it was a first half that the home side took charge of. Scott Flinders was in good form to deny David Worrall but was then helpless as Tom Hopper put the home side in front on 37 minutes.

Things went from bad to worse ten minutes into the second half when Worrall finally got the better of Flinders with a powerful effort from the edge of the area.

Ryan Noble pulled a goal back with a classy long range striker and gave Pools hope of a comeback, and that was given a big boost when Noble was fouled in the area and Pools were given the chance to level from the spot.

However, Neil Austin's penalty cannoned back off the crossbar and away from danger. Substitute Nathan Luscombe had a late effort hit the woodwork but Bury held on a for a win that lifts them off the bottom of the table and sends Pools rock bottom.

Disgraceful, everyone involved with the club should hang their heads in shame tonight - and that includes Ken Hodcroft and the faceless minions of IOR. So what will they do now? Probably sweet FA, same as they have for the best part of three years.

Must say its definately looking bleak this season, though to be fair the writting has been on the wall for a few seasons now. Would relegation be such a disaster, or would we be in danger of slipping from the league altogether, news which would gladden a few darlo supporters for sure. Or could we not enjoy a reasonable season and give the diehard fans some victories to cheer. Heres hoping it dosnt come to that, but alas i fear the worst.

I think if (as sadly looks most likely) we do end up back in Division 4 (let's call it what it is) next season then a lot depends on who the manager is (let's face it, it won't be Coops) - a lot of our current bunch of gutless wonders will be out of contract come next summer and I think after the season we're having, any manager with sense would give them a polite "thanks but no thanks" when it comes to new contracts. So it'd probably be a case of new broom, sweep clean. Because of this, I think getting back up would be a two season job as there'll have to be a transitional season but if Ken can get someone who's a bit better than Cooper has turned out to be at playing the transfer market there's nothing to say we couldn't do it. We shall see...
