Report:Colchester Spot On As Pools Pay The Penalty

Hartlepool United conceded 3 penalties as they fell to defeat against Colchester.

Report

Hartlepool United kept an unchanged side as they travelled to Colchester this afternoon. Unbeaten on the road this season, Pools were on the back foot for much of the first half.

The U's pairing of Kayode Odejayi and Clive Platt caused Pools all kinds of problems and both had a chance to score from a Marc Tierney cross early on. Peter Hartley's headed effort forced a good save out of the home keeper while Odejayi and Platt both headed over chances at the other end.

The real action began on 38 minutes when Sam Collins conceded a penalty after a foul on Kayode Odejayi. Kevin Lisbie placed the ball on the spot but fired over the bar.

However, just 5 minutes later the referee awarded the home side a second penalty after another foul on Kayode Odejayi, this time by Gary Liddle. Kevin Lisbie made no mistake from the spot to send the U's into the lead at half time.

No sooner had the second half began the referee had pointed to the spot yet again. This time it was a handball by Gary Liddle and Lisbie stepped up once more to double the home advantage.

Armann Bjornsson was brought on as Pools attempted to get back into the game but Scott Flinders needed to pull off a good save to deny Odejayi once more.

Tempers boiled over as Marc Tierney and Andy Monkhouse were both booked, this came after a confrontation between several player on the pitch following a tough tackle by Monkhouse on Lisbie.

Hartley did well to stop Lisbie completing his hat-trick while Adam Boyd fired wide with Pools best chance in the dying minutes.

Views lads? Unlucky today. I'm glad we won, of course. Good luck for the rest of the season. Thought you may have gone one up but we then got the pens. Will be interesting to see the replays!

We were stuck with Radio Essex on Pools player for the commentary. Worst commentary I've ever heard so I'm afraid I have no opinions on the game as I don't know what happened......

lol! Yep, am really happy with the win. Although, like Matt says, you could have been ahead but the second goal killed off the game. Good luck for the season. :D
