National League Promotion Changes

I understand the National League are making changes to their promotion system. Currently the Champions are automatically promoted to the Football league and the teams finishing 2nd to 5th are involved in play offs with the eventual winner going up. In a plan to be ratified at a meeting on June 10th, the teams finishing 4th, 5th ,6th and 7th play each other with the winning two teams playing the ones who finished 2nd and 3rd and the winners of those games playing each other for a place in the Football league. So teams finishing 2nd and third are in guaranteed play off semi finals and teams finishing as low as 7th will have interest at the end of the season.

With the ink not yet dry on the new managers contract, I am not predicting anything but the above system is an encouraging prospect with the seasons end possibly being quite exciting.

That sounds crazy to me. The second placed team could have accumulated an enormous lead over the seventh placed, over the course of the season, only to be denied promotion because of bad luck in a couple of play-off matches.

What’s the point of having a season if everything’s going to be decided like that?
Might as well allow the bottom teams to be involved in the play-offs….they could then have a bit of end-of season interest too.

Not without its drawbacks and as you rightly point out the runners up having consistently proved they are worthy of a higher league could potentially lose out to a team finishing 7th. However, even with the current system the runners up could be knocked out by a team finishing 5th so is there such a massive change? The advantage is that apart from the champions, six teams will have something to play for at the end of the season which is why I think the clubs will vote for it. I would like to think that Pools would be somewhere in the mix. Of course that assumes we don't go bust.

Is three down three up to easy??

Top two go up the next four play off, why should a team finishing 7th be even consider?

The team finishing third bottom of the football league usually only do it by the skin of their teeth, [the odd point or goal difference] they are as guilty as the bottom two.
Maybe they should play the [national league] play off winner?

Who knows who makes these type of decisions? More money people than football people.

Why should there be any sort of play-off ? Why not simply the top two (or four or whatever) go up. It's daft that the second placed team could loose out to the seventh. It's all about money but that's life these days.

Yep I expect money will be at the root of this. Mind you, I would bet a small wager that if under this system Pools scraped 7th place and had a shot at the play offs no one would complain.

Well, put it another way, I would rather not have a system where Pools came 2nd and then didn't get promotion because of the team that came 7th, or 5th....... or even 3rd.

If memory serves me, play-off games were first introduced to English football to ease the pain caused by the reduction of old First division numbers to the Premier League in it's current format. At which point the clubs and money men of the FL realised there was money to be made from extra knockout games and television rights. I'm not a fan of playoffs, but Pools have, almost, benefited significantly from these in the past!
No doubt the NL sees these new proposals as being beneficial financially and in creating additional interest within a wider audience in the League.
Perhaps if the FL increased the number of automatic promotion positions to two plus a playoff between 3rd and 4th in NL and 21st and 22nd in FL this could create even more interest / revenue!
Sadly FL clubs won't vote to put their status in jeopardy.

According to the Mail the proposal has been adopted by the National League so it's official.

As I said previously I'm not a fan of playoff system, but if we were 7th and won the playoff final at Wembley!!!!!!!!
