Not sure what to expect with this game, hopefully Dave Jones and his team have got their message across about winning personal battles and that our players aren't (as has been the case previously) intimidated by what I anticipate will be a physical team.

Looking for an improved showing and would be delighted with a point.

Don't normally bet on pools but took us for a draw, just sat down and going to have a look at the teams/set ups.

4-0 with 15 minutes to go. Trying to think of a reason to be optimistic.

Not a good start for the big fella, played three, lost two, drew one. One point out of nine, shipping eight and only replying twice. Edging closer to the drop zone each game.

The Newport and Yeovil games are the ones we needed to capitalise on, and didn't. The next three games are the stuff of nightmares. On the back of today's disaster.

With Jones bringing in an entire new backroom team you'd expect at least some sort of lift yet we seem to be getting worse rather than getting better. No shots on target today, unacceptable.

Yet another away drubbing!
For all his faults, even, Craig Hignett had realised that the team / squad were ill equipped to play offensively away from home. Just pack the midfield and try to stifle the opposition. I fear for Tuesday night if it is another 4 4 2 setup at Luton as I can envisage a "cricket score" result at Kenilworth Road given our defensive frailties.

Only hope for getting out of jaill this season is the introduction of an experienced hard tackling centre half and central midfield player (players the team have been crying out for in the last 5 seasons at least); the current players aren't going to develop these traits overnight. Though I doubt, even if they can be found, that the funds exist in Pools' coffers.

It is all very worrying. I too was expecting some kind of upturn in form when Jones arrived but it is the same old story. As I said yesterday, it is hard to think of a reason to be optimistic. I also worry about the money the club must be paying not just for Jones and his backroom staff but the large number of players who will be drawing wages who never play for the first team. The squad is bloated beyond any use. I just think it is only a matter of time before the financial siht hits the fan. When we were poor on the pitch in the past we could say the club has no money etc so it is only to be expected but since the new owners came in we have signed player after player but the results on the pitch are not much different from the last couple of years of IOR.

Perhaps the most damning statistic from yesterday's game is the lack of cautions handed out to Pools players. Reading the match reports they were collectively and individually taking a pounding, but not one player seems to have been capable of leaving a mark on the opposition!

It seems Jones, similar to previous managers, knows what the problems are, they just don't seem to have the solutions.

Jones talks of senior players helping the younger ones, think Bates can be classed as one of the senior pros. By the highlights he needs to hold his hands up to the first two yesterday.

Then again Jones has become susceptible to the same disease affecting previous managers. We weren't that bad against Yeovil, in fact we were quite good against a side who had beaten second top of this league in a derby type game only four days earlier and must have been full of confidence, yet Jones still needed to change it, couldn't see why myself.

It's going to be an interesting week were we entertain fourth and second top and are only five points off second bottom. If at anytime it was to go tits up this could well be the week.

I'm not sure the physical toughness is the major issue. Jones says technically we're very good it's just other things. I think the major issue is the mental toughness of certain players. The lack of resilience, to dig deep when it gets a bit tough. Negativity is transmitted much easier and quicker than resilience and hard graft through a group who find themselves slightly up against it, lets face it at 1-0 down the game is far from over.

Jones seems to think at this point, after we concede, we lose our discipline a little. We then choose to manage the game by going, in his words, 'gung ho' rather than seeing out the next ten minutes thinking and working together formulating a way to get back in the game.

This temporary 'gung ho' attitude probably accounts for the instances where we concede in quick succession, a damning statistic of recent pools sides. Once we've conceded two that is it, then the rot sets in and we invariably go on to concede four or five.

Hignett talked about managing the game, Jones has too but I'm not sure it's a physical thing primarily, it's probably the psychological side that's letting them down.
