Hartlepool v Morecambe, August 8th 2015 by Billy Zinc.

Unusual day for us Poolies, both a warm day and a win.

On most afternoon's we usually have the wind coming in from the sea, chilling a summers day and freezing ones bones on winter days, but not today. Today we had lovely tee shirt weather, with a warm wind from the south, and a win to boot!

All in all... happy with the first days result.

Wasn't at the game but heard/read and watched a fair bit already.

Still a bit ropey at the back but well happy with the clean sheet considering we have played all pre season with a back 3. Sounds like Worley is still finding his feet after missing a lot of football last year. Harrison off the pace as well, which is unlike him. Hopefully they will only get better.

Ok so it is only 1 game but Magney the answer to our 'midfield general' problem? a lot of questions asked about playing a recognised defender in there but if he can take him a couple of MoM awards... i'll be more than happy with that.

Woods sounds like he has started were he left off... which is great news.

By all accounts we had a very lively front 3... something we have had for a while and with them at least we will always be a threat and a danger to every team.

All sounds great for first day of the season. But what I am most happy with is the 'effort/desire/passion' that was displayed for the entire 90 minutes... how refreshing that is to hear that everyone seems to be in agreement on that at least. Keep that up for 46 games and we wont have to many complaints come May.

Well done Pools

I didn't bother with any of the friendlies Owen so Saturday was my 1st match and what was immediately noticeable to me apart from your notes above was that Featherstone was playing much further up the pitch and looking all the better for it !

The lad is getting better every game. The difference between when he came here and now is massive. I think he was painted out as a midfield battler type when he came but he's much better on the ball. A very neat passer, wants the ball and is getting a lot more confident going forward.

Not sure if people have seen the extended highlights on Morecambe's YouTube channel but they are worth a watch, especially for those not there. You see all their chances and also some of the indecision at the back we had, Worley and the keeper going for the same ball, poor play from Harrison where he ends up getting booked.

You also see the chance where Bingham took it round the keeper. That was probably our only other serious chance in the game.

Again not there but off what I heard we might not have many 'serious' chances but always sounded like we had a threat about us... even if we didn't carve our loads of chances... remember hearing both Woods and Fenwick firing off a couple of shouts as well.

Really like Featherstone... have been a fan since Woods got injured he really seemed to step up a gear in the 3 games I saw at the end of the year I don't really remember him giving the ball away... and like you said PP always wants it... not scared of having the ball in the middle of the park. Again refreshing for a Pools midfield haven't seen that in a few years.

Will have a watch of those clips now... thanks for the heads up... I am hoping that both Worley and Harrison improve massively. Worley had a lot of time out injured then couldnt get back in the team so Id expect it to take time for him to be 'match sharp' after such a long time out... Not sure why Harrison is so off the pace... know he had a stop start pre season but a young lad like him after player of the year awards thought he would be well up for this season.

We scored two the opposition didn't - what's not to like. Tuesday will be a real test.

I've decided to give a blog a go, especially as this place is becoming increasingly quiet.

I've put some thoughts on Saturday's game up there already: https://thoughtsfromthemillhouseterrace.wordpress.com/

I'll see how it goes, might get bored after a couple of weeks but we'll see.

A good read, Poolie - the extended highlights told the same story, which rarely happens these days so it is good to have both angles covered. Following a year in New York and an exile period in London, I'll probably get to my first Pools home game in years in September. How odd!
