I believe that David Mirfin has been released by Scunthorpe. I presume that he would prefer a long-term deal with pay not much less than what he's been getting (which I suspect we can't afford).

Mr Moore is looking for (hopefully) short-term cover for Dan Jones and would probably not want to tie up our little remaining budget (one more player?) on a long-term deal for a defender, even though he appears to rate Mirfin.

Hartlepool's League 2 season gets underway against Morecambe at the Vic on Saturday to kick-off the 2015/16 season; which will of course see expectations high, certainly higher than last season, under Ronnie Moore.

Walker said on Twitter he was gutted to miss the game but it was through injury. Think he would have been on bench a head of Hawkins

Thought we looked excellent going forward at times today, pretty poor at the back throughout. They could have had four or five if they'd taken their chances, we took two of the three we had.

Liked Paynter, put himself about, won headers, tracked back, good goal. Bingham looks like he could be the most important signing of the lot, great game.

At the back though. Worley looked shaky, Harrison not himself. The pair of them really didn't inspire confidence. Luckily we had Magnay in there who was the best player on the park - an excellent performance.

Keeper looked confident, couple of good saves.

They were a decent side, just couldn't finish at all. The big baldy striker was excellent, really deserved a goal.

Heard on the radio after the game Moore said it was going to be Bates in the middle - not sure how that would have worked out like. Think we really rode our luck as it was. Good win though, three points on the board, on we go.

An encouraging start, no more than that - but I'd echo most of the above, lots of promise upfront but oh dear, a better side than very ordinary Morecambe would have punished Pools for some woeful defending. Worley and Duckworth in particular were dreadful - thank God Bates wasn't in their too. The sooner that RM gets Mirfin signed up the better but hey, a two goals from the strikers and a clean sheet thanks to an excellent goalkeeping display (and more than a little luck) is rather more than I expected today - well done lads!

Nice to see a clean sheet for a change. That's what a half decent goalkeeper can do for a defence. Agree Mirfin would be a big asset but the side looks so much better than last season. Well done Ronnie and well played Paynter and Bingham

The 2015/16 season got underway for Hartlepool, as it did the remainder of League 2 at the weekend, with this starting in a win at the Vic against Morecambe on Saturday. Ronnie Moore, and his assistant Sam Collins of course, celebrated the signing of new deals with a two-nil win.
