Pre Season Expectations

So I know its early days and we have only played two games but I'm curious to know what people are expecting from Ronnie Moore's Hartlepool this season.

Overall I am expecting a much better season than we have had for a while on and off the pitch. I think Ronnies energy and enthusiasm is contagious and a certain amount of pride/fight seems to be back in the team.

On the field I expect drastic improvement in all departments and generally a better standard of football week in week out.

What does this mean for us when the final whistle goes on game 46... only time well tell but here is what I am hoping/expecting.

League Position:
Expect - top half finish so 12th or above.

Hope - Play-offs, an achievable target, if things go our way.

Cups:
Expect - No real expectations, just not to be embarrassed against any club (lower or higher). Cup embarrassments always seem to get more attention.

Hope - for a decent cup run 3rd round in League or FA cup would be great

The Team:
Expect - us to show fight and passion regularly, something that has been missing for a while but I don't think RM would let that slide anyway.

Hope - That we actually play good/exciting football... that we are positive and try to win games instead of not lose games. The league is there foe the taking for me... so why not go all out.

There is a host of individual players that based on reports/reputation/potential could do great things. Particularly excited to see Rakish, Fenwick and Woods... although I think Paytner is looking a great signing now... after the training reports and his own comments.

Also big season for some of the young lads... Walker in particular.

To summarise:
Expect top 12
Hope top 7

Agree with your aspirations Owen, some effort and passion from the players would be a huge improvement on what has been on offer at the Vic in recent years. I genuinely believe a season without flirting with relegation would mark progress, coupled with a half decent run in one of the cup competitions.

Can't go overboard, like some, and start predicting top 7 finish when most of the squad remain untested.

No-one will be surprised that I agree with Old Poolie, I expect no more than a mid-table finish at best and will be happy with that. Ten pre-season signings is fine but I was disappointed that Bates was retained and will likely lose some of my respect for RM if he decides to also offer the inept Parnaby a new deal.

In my view both of these parasites and terminal sicknotes personify the failure of Colin Coopers disastrous regime and should not be associated with our new look side/club at any price. RM would be far better advised to hold off on any further signings until he has seen his first choice side properly tested against the likes of Spennymoor, Scunny and Chesterfield.

Your hopes are spot on for me Owen! I just hope if it doesnt quite go perfect that the 'fans' don't quickly turn which I suspect they will! This isn't going to change overnight so mid table would be success!

Top half would constitute an excellent season for me. Just as importantly some good performances at home and some good wins.

We've not topped 57 points since our promotion season under Wilson, 60 points might be a nice target to aim for.

Mid-table plus third round in at least one cup would do me fine. With so many new faces it's going to take a few games to find the best combination and for a team to gel so I don't expect a run away start. Also, let's not forget that the new players are generally cast-offs from clubs in the lower leagues or untested at this level so we can't really expect them to be world beaters.

Aspirations are top three, at worst win play off final, through to JPT final, at least three FA cup appearances and at least two 'league' cup appearances.

We have a good manager who knows what it takes to get promotion from league 2. He has put all the ingredients together and to be honest most with good pedigree.

It was he who instigated the revolution, through which he was wholeheartedly supported from most quarters, with regular good performances the gates will rise and with us all pulling in the same direction anything is possible, barring major injuries to key personnel.

We have seen that evolution takes too long, revolution was necessary and the main purpose of any revolution is to implement overnight change.

We shouldn't aspire to emulate what Wycombe accomplished last term.....we should aspire to better what Wycombe did.

Be more dog.

For the first time in a number of years I am looking forward with optimism and not just hoping we can reach 50 points however we also have to be realistic. We have signed a large number of players but let's be honest they are all free transfer and history will show they will not all be a success. It is usually the teams with the biggest budgets that are successful and whilst I obviously do not know our budget I do not think it will be that high. Remember last time we went up we were paying top wack wages.
At the present I think we will end up mid table but fingers crossed for top seven.

We have already seen that Ronnie Moore can get tremendous performances out of players whom he does not rate and whom he did not choose.

We have now had a significant injection of players whom Ronnie Moore does rate and whom he did choose.

Cast-offs? Maybe. Sometimes players do not perform anywhere their potential due to poor management. I have not heard any Pools supporters criticise Rakesh Bingham for his performances with us last season - yet he is a "Mansfield cast-off". Paynter is a Carlisle cast-off. Carson played for relegated Cheltenham last season.

Yes, it will take time for the team to gel. Yes it's probable that one or more of the new signings will prove something of a flop.

Nevertheless, I shall be disappointed if we don't at least finish in the play-off positions. I'd like to think that we are capable of automatic promotion. As for being League Champions, well, it's about time we actually won something.

and you know what?

I want a team that plays with passion.

I want a team that plays beautiful football that is imaginative, fast-flowing, creative and exciting, with verve and panache.

I want a team that wins more games than it loses.

I want a team that is ALL of the above.

I want a team that, when I set out on a long journey to watch them, I know I'll enjoy watching them.

I want the dismally dire, dispiritingly dreadful dross I witnessed under Colin Cooper banished forever.

I want a team that I can be proud of.

Well Ed we all want that in fact every supporter of every club wants that but I think you have to be realistic as they say Rome was not built in a day and you get what you pay for.

Of course every supporter of every club wants that. With Ronnie Moore as our manager we've been shown what is possible even with limited resources so our level of expectations have been raised by that.

Note the differentiation between my 2 previous posts:- (1) hopes/expectations, (2) what I want!
