Jeff Stelling, Eddie Kyle, Keith Curle and many others are all coming out saying what a rough deal Cooper has had at Pools. Yes we all know what has been happening at the Vic. with IOR lack of investment but it was no secret. Cooper must of been well aware of this when he took the job. After his initial application he had seen Phil Brown turn it down and John Hughes sacked because he wanted a clearout and six or seven new people in.
I have no doubt Cooper is a really nice bloke, hard working and probably an excellent coach of young players but lets be honest he took over a very poor side and made them worse.
His record on signings is poor to say the least. On being appointed he brought two players to the club Compton and Rodney a quick look at their records showed that even at young ages they had goodness how many clubs which indicated there was something wrong with them and Cooper already knew them both. In the case of Rodney he was at least only given monthly contracts and he showed exactly why nobody wanted him to be brutal he was weak as water but why did we keep giving him contracts everybody could see he was not up to it? His third signing a player he had not seen, Duckworth, recommended for a trial by a mate however did turn out to be a gem.
At the beginning of that season he was lucky his mate at the Boro loaned him two players, Burgess and Dolan followed later by Williams. Two of these were in my mind way above Pools standards and way out of our pockets and to say we were lucky to get them is an understatement. ( I thought Dolan was about at his level and I notice he has not had one league game start at Bradford)
Next to enter the Vic is another old friend Harewood who was without a club i.e nobody wanted him. He too has been a flop but for some reason he has been lucky that the supporters took to him. To be honest he is no better than Howard.
Well after escaping relagation by the skin of our teeth he had the oppertunity for a clearout but what happens he gives contracts to underperforming players and lets better players go stating they will be replaced by better players.
Well we all know what happened then he replaced them with his old Boro mates Bates and Parnaby. Both have abysmal fitness records with Parnaby having only played about 50 games in the past seven years also he was a full back which was probably the only position we did not need cover for. Then to top it up he give Tommy Miller a contract after he too could not find another club.
Sorry but even if IOR released funds to bring players in I would have reservations about Cooper spending it.
Everybody knows that football managers only average about two or three years especially at our level and Cooper had his chance whether he had his hands tied or not he was still a failure just look at the league table!

Perhaps the players he signed were the only ones who would accept low wages as they had no where else yo go

My understanding was near the end of last season Cooper said he was already making plans for the following season and Bates and Parnaby were two of his targets. They did in fact sign as soon as possible and I am quite sure they will not be cheap options. I do agree they probably had no one else interested in them.

In my view, for all of his aforementioned failings Colin Cooper simply HAD to go - and I would be very surprised if he secured a managerial position at another pro or even semi-pro club within the foreseeable future. It is all very well for outsiders such as Curle etc, and even Sir Jeff (who has admitted to being a personal friend of Cooper) to pass comment from a distance. As we all know he is generally regarded as a 'nice guy' throughout football. However, I believe that many of the comments purported to be in support of Cooper are simply indirect criticisms of Hodcroft & Co. These 'outsiders are as much out of touch with what is going on at HUFC as Ken Hodcroft is with the fanbase, media, council, police - and probably even reality itself.
