Pools Beaten By Sunderland
Hartlepool held there own fairly well against some of Sunderland's first choice players for a good 60-70 minutes at the Vic on Tuesday before eventually slipping to a 3-0 defeat.
The decision of Gus Poyet to change his entire team on 60 minutes in favour of his U21 players, including striker Mikael Mandron who last season reportedly turned down a loan with us in favour of Fleetwood Town, is what turned the game.
Mandron was involved in the first, setting up Carl Lawson to beat Scott Flinders on 70 minutes. Two minutes later Andrew Cartwright made it two with the third also scored by Cartwright on 78 minutes as his effort deflected off Matthew Bates past Flinders.
Coops allowed a number of players to play the entire 90 minutes, including Tommy Miller, with only two changes made and that was a good thing but the conceding of three goals in eight minutes would, pre season or not, be of concern to him.
