Back In For Bates

Back In For Bates

Matthew Bates spent some time training with us last summer but eventually decided to join Bradford as they could offer him a place in League 1.

Coops obviously knows Bates well from his Middlesbrough days, they go back far enough for the Hartlepool manager to have played alongside the defender who seems to have been in the game forever but is still only 27.

It's always a disappointment to be knocked back by a players but when they have played most of their career in the Premier League or Championship I could understand him seeking a higher level, I wouldn't now think that coming to the Vic would be a case of his 'settling for what he could get' though mind.

Bates has a long history of injuries but is looks like he got through most of last season fairly well on that front but still finds himself a free agent this summer after Bradford released him.

If we could get Bates on the right deal, and not have too many concerns about the costs of an injury prone player, then he could be just the type of player with the experience that Coops knows could help us out and help the younger players coming through.

With a good few years left in him, depending on how his body is after injuries, with him versatile to play in defence and midfield if the reports in the Evening Gazette of a 'potential interest' are true I could see this happening and see him having a positive impact at the Vic for at least a season or two.
