Four Go Nine Retained The Rest Talk

Four Go Nine Retained The Rest Talk

The official released/retained list of players was something that we revealed on Tuesday with just four players officially leaving the Vic, having not been offered contracts, with another nine having the options of another year on their Hartlepool's stays taken up.

Just two players were under contract. They were.

Marlon Harewood
Brad Walker

I agreed with the Harewood signing at the time as I felt he could bring some experience to our forward line and pass on some knowledge to the younger players coming through. I thought he'd only signed until the end of the season though and I'm not so sure about another season, Walker goes without saying that I'm glad he still is but would expect interest shown in him.

The four released were.

Zak Boagey
Andy Monkhouse
Greg Rutherford
Simon Walton

I've liked Monkhouse and didn't mind Walton, Boagey and Rutherford were always certain to be released. My own viewings are few and far between so I'd have to go with the majority and it seems that Monkhouse and Walton being released was the right choice based on the past season or two, on the whole.

Those that had options taken on their contracts to extend them by another year were.

Jack Compton
Michael Duckworth
Scott Flinders
Jonathan Franks
Darren Holden
Luke James
Andy Rafferty
Jordan Richards
Josh Rowbotham

A fair mix of youth and experience being retained and I can't say that I'm overly disappointed, on the whole, with this retained list.

I'm not so sure that some will still be at the Vic this time next year though when that option expires.

The club say that 'discussions are continuing with other remaining first team players', by my reckoning that would mean they were.

Neil Austin
Same Collins
James Poole
Lewis Hawkins

I don't think I've missed anyone off?

I'm not entirely sure why talks would be continuing with Hawkins but if I were Coops I would hope that a deal could be agreed with Austin as he's definitely one worth keeping and I personally think that the experience of Collins could be worth another season, maybe in a coaching role too. I'd like to keep Poole, not sure others would though.

The fact, given the season that we had, only four players have been officially released is perhaps the biggest surprise to me in some ways? I know I'm not too disappointed at those retained but wouldn't the sheer volume kept suggest the club feel that the vast majority have performed this season, when many haven't really have they.

We'll have to wait and see how these talks with others go, but I'm hopeful most on that 'to be decided list' can agree an extended stay at the Vic.

Thank you chairman

I can't decide whether he was sacked or left by mutual consent whatever that means today. I hope Collins moves to new pastures, as he is a common link with failed Pools managers.

Ronnie No Moore

Did he jump or was he pushed? The official line is Moore has left by mutual consent, either way Pools are looking for a new manager after a parting of ways.

Having called on the team to 'get at' Stevenage last night, Hartlepool fell to yet another defeat yesterday evening.
