'If It's Football, It's Vital'

We'll See Your Two And Raise You Three

In November Newport beat Hartlepool 2-0 at Rodney Parade, we saw their two and raised them to three as we won at the Vic and kept yet another cleansheet in the 3-0 win as the defensive stability continued.

Christian Burgess has spoken to sportmail about being happy to gain revenge over Newport for that defeat with Hartlepool much better prepared for their physical unit this time and how much another win meant to everyone at the club.

This has just added to the 'feel good factor' at the Vic at the moment.

'It was a fantastic win and there is a good feeling around the place at the moment.

'It was another good performance and we got the three points we wanted, so everybody was really happy.

'We have ground out some results before, we did that well at Dagenham, and the gaffer talks a lot about that - not allowing the opposition to get in front but instead getting our noses in front.'

If you're a defender you also ways to see cleansheets and we recorded a third successive one, which obviously pleased Burgess who is said to have had another solid game in defence.

We'll miss him when he returns to Middlesbrough, which I'd assume he will at the end of the season.

Sam Collins returning to defence has made a big difference too but it's the defensive unit working as one that's working best of all at the moment and allowing the more attacking players a little more freedom to do what they need to.

'We defended really well, Daz was superb, Jordy really good and big Sam won a lot of headers.

'We are doing really well as a unit, four clean sheets out of five and three on the bounce. We are enjoying it at the back at the moment.

'We knew they would come out fast in the second-half but Scott didn't have a lot to do, but what he did, he did well.

'As a unit we are doing our defensive duty and then giving the ball to the likes of Luke James, Luke Williams, Monks and Bradders and letting them do what they can do.'

Thoughts for some will now turn to the play off, I think we're too far away from them but you never know if we can string together a run of results like we had in October.

The main thing though is that we've moved away from the bottom two in League 2 towards a place that should bring us the safety that was the priority when Coops took over as manager last summer.
