Hartlepool Swoop To Sign Plymouth Star Walton

Hartlepool United have completed the signing of Plymouth Argyle captain Simon Walton.

The 24-year-old midfielder played a key role in guiding the Pilgrims to League Two safety last season, scoring nine goals from the centre of the park.

Leeds-born Walton started his career at Elland Road before earning a big money move to then Premier League side Charlton Athletic in 2004.

He was quickly farmed on on loan to Ipswich Town to gain first team experience and was later loaned to Cardiff City before joining Queens Park Rangers on a permanent basis.

After a loan spell at Hull he joined Plymouth for a record breaking £750,000 in the summer of 2008.

He was unable to hold down a regular place in the side at Home Park, criticised by former boss Paul Sturrock for poor discipline, but he came into his own last season after being handed the captaincy by new Pilgrims boss Carl Fletcher.

A tough-tackling midfielder, Walton will be seen as the replacement for the recently departed Gary Liddle, adding bite to Neale Cooper's often tame squad.
