Season Ends With Heavy Defeat For Pools Reserves
Hartlepool Reserves ended their season with a heavy defeat at the hands of Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.
It was a good start for the youthful Pools side, with Greg Ruddy and Callum Hassan going close early on. But at the other end Andy Rafferty was forced into a smart save to deny the hosts from opening the scoring.
But the Iron would soon be in front as Pools' defence failed to clear a loose ball, allowing Scott Matthews to smash home from close range.
The lead was doubled before the break when a Matt Godden free kick was well saved by Rafferty in the away goal, only for Connor Jennings to react quickest and slot home.
Micky Barron's half-time team talk did little to change the flow of the game as Scunthorpe extended their lead just eight minutes into the second half. A neat team move saw Luke Hornsey receive the ball 25 yards from goal, and his strike beat Rafferty to make it 3-0.
Trialist Greg McDermott had a effort well saved while substitute Dan Jones fired an effort just wide of the target. But Hartlepool did pull a goal back when Callum Hassan's long range strike blasted past a helpless Josh Lillis in the home goal.
But any hopes of a comeback were soon ended as Godden added his name to the scoresheet, neatly lobbing the ball over Andy Rafferty with seconds remaining.
This defeat, against the league's bottom club, means Micky Barron's men will need to wait on the outcome of tomorrow's clash between Bradford and Hull to see if they will end the season in third place in the Central League table.
