Joey Barton Powerless As Hartlepool Beat Newcastle
A returning Joey Barton couldn't prevent Newcastle Reserves from defeat against Hartlepool Reserves at Victoria Park tonight.
Pools took the lead in the first half through Michael Mackay. He raced past the Toon defence and slotted home past keeper Ole Soderberg.
Midfielders Ritchie Humphreys, Alan Power and Jonny Rowell all went close to doubling Pools lead as the Magpies struggled to get a foothold in the game.
Striker Colin Larkin doubled Pools lead on the stroke of half time, Leon McSweeney caused a goalmouth scramble and Larkin was on hand to nod the ball over the line. Toon defender Ben Tozer did well to clear a Billy Greulich effort at the start of the second period as Pools continued to dominate the proceedings.
The visitors were given an ideal opportunity to get back into the game when Phil Airey was bundled over by Pools keeper Grant Herbert. However, Barton put his spot kick over the bar.
Alan Power should have made it 3 after another McSweeney corner caused havoc in the Newcastle penalty box. Power's effort was blasted way over the crossbar but Pools held on to claim a welcome win over the Geordies.
