'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Winter's World 26/01

The early news this week was of FIFA's decision not to take any further disciplinary action against Thierry Henry, which came as no surprise.

Whilst most decent football fans would have been appalled by the injustice of his handball that was contributory to Ireland losing out on a World Cup place, the authorities refuse to get involved in match incidents such as these.

They will not listen to repeated requests for video replays and are as equally dogmatic in their stance that on field decisions be left to the match officials. Putting it another way the licence to continue cheating has been rubber-stamped for the foreseeable future.

Monday evening I watched the new BBC football show on the night. Is it only me that is annoyed by listening to the way Clem speaks?

It was good to see Gareth Southgate on TV. He really is too nice to be involved in football. I am sure Boro fans would love to hear what really went on at the Riverside. Gentleman Gareth is never going to spill the beans though.

Away from the TV real football was taking part for two local sides. Hartlepool gave a much improved display at promotion chasing Charlton Athletic but once again lost out. The good news was the return to goal scoring action of Denis Behan and the bad news is that I have just looked at Pools' forthcoming fixtures.

Oh my God, another end of season flirtation with relegation could be on the cards unless they start getting some points soon. Saturday's tricky away game at Bristol Rovers looks the easiest on paper with Norwich, Leeds, Southampton and Huddersfield all on the horizon.

Hartlepool lost away at Bristol Rovers and with their run of games coming up are in danger of getting sucked into a relegation battle once again. There's two major questions tonight. What will be the attendance and can Pools get the three points? Both are equally worrying posers.

Post Christmas, the economic climate, current results and the home record this season. There are a few of the excuses for falling gates.

Unfortunately it is a vicious circle and the clubs chances to push on are going to be seriously affected if the supporters don't return to the terraces. This is not a problem particular to Hartlepool; the whole game is in a financial mess and a stark warning lies just down the A66.

It's no good moaning when it is too late, Pools have been run prudently but rely more and more on IOR to keep things going.

On the pitch, it's one of those look away now moments as the next four fixtures after tonight would put fear into any club. That is why tonight it is vital to get three points and settle the nerves before the games against four sides whose attendances give them the financial clout that we can only dream about.

Enjoy your week.

Enjoy your week.

Jeff, now hopefully you have realised why so many fans have been angry and upset with form, results and performances since the beginning of Nov. We all saw this run of fixtures coming and causing us a whole world of trouble. However it is to late as we find outselves going into the hardest point of our season on the back of 3 defeats and a run of 9 defeats in 13 games. Flirting with relegation is being kind based on the last 3 months. You seem to be on good terms with CT, better terms than the fans given his recent outbursts. Maybe you could have a word with him and tell him to do the right thing and step down instead of enjoying his free ride to League 2.

I noticed he didn't mention the terrible referee in the Bristol game. How Anthony stay on the pitch after that tackle on Jones amazes me. Yet Liddle ,Humphreys and Monkhouse got booked for sod all
