'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Winter's World #8: Jeff Fights Back

Before setting off for Scotland, I had my usual scan of the message boards. At Darlington on the Darlo Uncovered site, there are still mixed emotions regarding Colin Todd.

On the Vital Hartlepool site, I read with interest some of the derogatory comments about me and the article that I write that appears on the site.

Criticism is something that I got used to as a referee, and when starting working in local radio, it was the same.

Initially, when joining Alpha Radio as an ex-referee and Boro supporter, I was an easy target for comments of an unsavoury nature.

Whilst obviously not being everyone`s cup of tea, the fans gradually started to appreciate that the publicity that I created for the club and its supporters was positive, as most areas of the media choose to ignore anyone other than the biggest clubs in the region.

Likewise, a good number of Poolies have stayed loyal to my shows and have contributed regularly.

Many who post on message boards have shown their immaturity by making childish comments but the remainder are loyal fans who merely give their opinions.

Well, I will continue to give mine. You may not like them but I have a programme on local radio that is there for Hartlepool fans to talk about their team.

Like my columns, you don`t have to read them so you can choose to turn off or not even bother to turn on.

However, this apathy does not help the local station in your area, which is trying to give air time to your team.

As usual, Hartlepool's press conference on Thursday was lively. Pools boss Chris Turner is a true football man and after the official stuff, he often talks about the events of the week, refs etc.

I wish at times the fans who knock him could see this side of the man whose enthusiasm and knowledge for the game is immense.

The news from the Darlo press conference was more interesting though. Colin Todd had declined to speak to the press and had nominated Steve Foster to do the honours.

Coincidence maybe, but perhaps adding fuel to the fire of speculation surrounding his future. I wish I had been there.

A busy weekend started with my regular breakfast slots on both Alpha and Radio Hartlepool, then it was off to Liverpool.

My first speaking event of the weekend was at the Holiday Inn in the city.

The Dinner was a fundraiser for Woolton FC, a set-up that runs 42 teams from kids as young as four years of age!!

I was the speaker with a Q&A session with Everton legend Neville Southall and comedy impressionist Mark Langley.

Rav and the boys in Liverpool do a great job raising funds for the kids and I am sure that their funds were pumped up considerably after this event.

My speaking engagements meant that I could take a game in on Saturday afternoon as I was due to be in Stoke in the evening.

As luck would have it, Boro were playing at Coventry, so for the second time this season, I made for the Ricoh Arena, hoping that this time I would not be mistaken for Graham Poll.

Having watched the Boro get trashed 5-0 by West Brom, you would imagine that matters could not get worse.

Well, at the end of the game, along with over 1,600 travelling Boro fans, I realised that they could.

2-0 up with a quarter of an hour to go, we declared, took off Adam Johnson and quite clearly thought that the points were in the bag.

Even their consolation goal did not bother me as I had backed 2-1 for the Great North Air Ambulance charity bet.

At least a daft couple of quid on Sean St. Ledger for the first goalscorer slightly eased the pain.

It was typical Boro and the late equaliser felt like defeat rather than a decent point on the road.

At least Hartlepool won at home at last and even Darlo picked up a point on the road. News was breaking though that Toddy had gone.

Emails were flying about and DFC announced a fairly amicable parting of company with Colin Todd. This did surprise me, especially when SSN announced that Todd had claimed via the LMA that he had been sacked.

As I suggested last week, a compensation claim is likely.

More news out of Darlington announced that Liddle and Maddo had been installed as temporary managers. What has happened to Dean Windass?

Putting it all into context, I called in on the way home to see my old mate Mark Halsey. A shaven head and considerable weight loss suggested that his cancer was taking its toll.

But Mark's a fighter and more than any other result this season, this is one that I am praying comes good.

Ah, so Jeff does read the comments we make about him... hahaha
comeonthepools
I dont think they are that bad, i think members here want Hartlepool to do well and talk about there team and are not that bother when you talk about other teams. I'm sure your big enough to not let comments bother you, if you are then you should not post articles. I enjoy reading stuff about Hartlepool and other teams but its not everyones cup of tea.

Generally speaking I thought that most of the criticism of these columns was unjustified - I found the comments interesting and informative last season. However this article is an example of how to go about irritating your readers - this is a Hartlepool supporters site, I do not want all contributors to be uncritical Poolie fans but I would expect the column to be predominantly about Hartlepool. In this article Pool take third place to Borer and Darlo. Some comment on the Colin Todd situation is justifiable but mostly it should have been about Hartlepool.

Hi Jeff I need to break my response down into 2 parts due to the 5000 character limit here. I am one of the people who posts regularly on the Vital Hartlepool site. I do not represent those who own or manage the site. I do not claim to be representative of anyone else who posts on the site other than myself. My views are my own. Sometimes I provide my reflections on the views of others (and I shall do a bit more of that here). Those reflections are mine and nobody else's.. Depending on one's point of view, many of my posts could be considered immature, childish, amusing, dull, repetitive or whatever. I am sure that some of my posts concerning you could be considered derogatory (for example, initiating a poll asking people if they'd prefer to read a column written by you, or by another poster's 10 year old, and earlier providing a parody of one of your columns). I would like to apologise to you if you have found any of my posts personally hurtful. While that was not my intention, I acknowledge that it's easy to forget that someone who is a public figure is still a human being with real feelings and I was perhaps guilty of that. In an effort to be more constructive (and I hope you will take this in the spirit in which it is intended), I would also like to respond to some of the points you made in your article. I regret that I'm unable to comment on the impact of your celebrity status. It seems that I move in quite different circles to you; I had not come across your name before I started visiting Vital Hartlepool. If you are raising the profile of Hartlepool United, great. Please forgive me though if I still remain a bit sceptical since, as you acknowledge, you are a Boro supporter. I would personally prefer our club's profile to be raised by someone who is wholehearted about it. Perhaps that will always be a vulnerability you carry in this role. Because of my lack of access to North East radio stations such as Alpha Radio & Hartlepool Radio, because I can't afford to subscribe to Pools Player, I cannot appreciate the impact you have had in raising local awareness of HUFC. I can certainly agree about the longstanding need for that to happen. If you have achieved what you say, well done and thank you. I presume that you get paid to carry out these functions; those who pay you evidently believe that you provide value for money and that carries rather more weight than my views. I am reliant on second-hand reports of (for example) match commentaries. The reports I receive often express frustrations about your alleged “waffle”. Cricket commentators are notorious for this but given the often slow pace of that game, such waffling is often seen as charming and in a spirit appropriate for that sport. Football's a different matter. It's a much faster moving game where there's always something happening - well, usually! Additionally, as you rightly point out, Hartlepool United have long suffered a dearth of media attention and there are many of us who over the years have been deprived of information about the club. Surely when attention IS focused on Hartlepool, such as during a commentary on a Hartlepool match, that focus should be maintained as much as possible? I acknowledge again that I'm out on a limb a bit here, because I don't know for sure what is being talked about in the alleged 'waffle'. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say, nevertheless.

My best-grounded and hopefully constructive criticism is about the content of your Vital Hartlepool column. It could be argued that the particular column I'm responding to was not typical, but I hope you will nevertheless allow me to use it as an example. You wrote 22 lines in response to the 'derogatory' comments on Vital Hartlepool; the cynical might suggest that we're giving you something to write about, in Oscar Wilde “there's only one thing worse than being talked about” style. You also wrote 18 lines which could be categorised as “Jeff Winter's diary” (my best wishes to your friend with cancer, by the way – and I do understand the point you were trying to make there), 15˝ lines on Darlo, 15 lines on Boro and 3˝ lines on Hartlepool United. My request would be that you significantly change the balance in favour of Hartlepool United. I don't claim to be typical of Vital Hartlepool users but at the same time I'm reasonably sure I'm not alone in feeling the following. I visit the Vital Hartlepool site to read about Hartlepool United. I'm known for saying that “I'm not really interested in Leeds” but actually I'm not really interested in Boro or Darlo either. If I was, I'd visit sites relevant to them. Also, please forgive me, but I presume that your own website gives access to your personal diary for those with an interest in that. I can understand that you may only be writing in accordance with the wishes of those who commission your column; if that's the case, please let me know and I'll address my concerns to them. You point out that people don't have to read your columns. Similarly nobody is under any obligation to read my posts (or anyone else's) on Vital Hartlepool or indeed any other website. You at least have the satisfaction of knowing that nobody pays me for the rubbish that I write! Both of us write in part in an effort to maintain our integrity. You have the added satisfaction that your words are valued enough for someone to pay for them. If my comments help you in any way to improve the focus and/or quality of what you write, then I trust that they will be doing both of us a favour.
